A couple of weeks ago, Jared Bradshaw was kind enough to take me on a walking tour of six Broadway theaters in Midtown Manhattan. Jared is one of the current stars of Forbidden Broadway and soon will be joining the Chicago company of Jersey Boys!

Subways are for singing

Ya' just never know what you'll stumble upon in the New York City subways. Sure the subway tunnels are filled with rats and (especially in the summer) "pee smell," but it’s also filled with amazing artists.

For example, yesterday, in the subway corridor between the 7 train and F/V/D lines underneath Bryant Park a family of singers, The Boyds, were harmonizing (and selling cds). I happened to have my 4-megapixel point-and-shoot camera with me to capture of few minutes of their art.

Many of the artists performing in the subways have been selected by the MTA for it's "Music Under the City" program. Click here for more information about the program.

The Boyds don't have a website but they do have a couple of cds (including a Christmas CD) that they offer for sale. If you would like to purchase a copy of one of their cds, you'll have to track them down on the subways -- or shoot me an e-mail at takeacoldshower@gmail.com and I'll give them a ring to find out how you can order a copy of one of their cds.

Scenes from FUERZA BRUTA

I shot these scenes on my Olympus Stylus Verve 4 megapixel point-and-shoot camera. I had no idea that they would allow audience members to shoot video or I would have brought my mini-dv camcorder (the quality would have been better).

In any case, FUERZA BRUTA (by the creators of DE LA GUARDA) is amazing and they have partnered with an organization called Charity: Water to help bring water to places in the world that don't have clean drinking water. If you are in NYC, the show is worth the trip -- and if you have some extra cash, think about making a donation.

A Night at the Theatre

The Higher Education of Khalid Amir, a funny and entertaining new play by Monica Bauer, is playing through August 3 at the Workshop Theatre Mainstage at the Midtown International Theater Festival.

In the play, the Mad Burka Army from the tiny Gulf nation of Abed has burka-ed the Statue of Liberty, and is on a rampage across the USA, burka-ing statues of Greek nymphs and billboards of Angelina Jolie. Suspicion lands on mild-mannered, musical theater loving Abedian professor Khalid Amir. Comedy, indeed, does ensue.

The Mighty Whitey Righties: Behind the Music

In September 2007, I was fortunate enough to be invited into the recording studio when Christine Lavin re-recorded one of my favorite songs of hers. I was there with my JVC camera in hand and have FINALLY edited the footage down to this short "Behind the Music" type documentary.

I shot this on a disposable video camera from CVS. The video and sound quality ain't great but it's a chance to see what it's like on board the Queen Mary 2 at the beginning of her maiden transatlantic journey from Hamburg, Germany, on August 1, 2005. Bon voyage!

Montreal: Moulin Rousse

Sometimes it's nice to simply take in the view(s). Montreal has some beautiful sites to see and wish I had more time to visit. This tour takes you from the highest point of Montreal, looking down on the city, to Old Montreal. The church is Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours Church in Old Montreal.

The music is Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006 - 1. Preludio by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by Gordon Rowland. The recording is public domain and is available at MusOpen.com.
